Licoln Senior Center
Lincoln, Rhode Island
The new Lincoln Senior Center provides a great example of combining green features with gerontologically informed architecture.
Green Strategy
The Center, currently on target to achieve LEED Gold
certification, utilizes ground- source heat-pumps to make its heating
and cooling more efficient. Its walls and roof are constructed of
Structurally Insulated Panels made of OSB plywood and solid foam
insulation which reduces thermal bridging. The project also meets the
Advanced Buildings Core Performance Guidelines, which includes Energy
Star approved appliances.
Design for the Aging
The building is oriented around a large vaulted central
hall, which houses natural wood trusses and a towering stone
fire-place. Rooms for dining, arts, exercise, computers and
entertainment flank this focal point, which creates a simple frame of
reference. Tall windows let in natural light, and allow views of the
wooded property while skylights and clerestory windows gently fill the
spaces with natural light. The Center is also designed with separate
entrances to allow rooms to be used off-hours by the Town, and has all
the necessities to serve as a Town emergency shelter.
